Having a cluttered wardrobe can be overwhelming and make it difficult to find the items you need. Luckily, there are some simple tips to help you streamline your wardrobe and keep it organized.
Preperation
First take before pictures. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing the before and after pictures of the progress you've made.
Gather the tools. You need black garbage bags for donatable and trash items. You also could get some vaccume seal bags for things you are going to store for later.
Remove Items & Declutter
When you're ready to start, take everything out of your wardrobe and sort it into three piles: keep, donate/sell, and throw away. If you wont have time to finish you can also look through it one by one without taking everything out and just remove the ones you aren't keeping. Be honest with yourself about what you actually wear and what you haven't worn in a long time. Does it fit you, do you feel confident in it, is it warn out or damaged, is it usually still hanging on your closet or in your drawer when your putting away laundry? If so, let it go. If you wish, you can keep your favorite items that are one or two sizes too big if you reasonably will be in that size again. Consider putting them on a sealed bag and put it in storage. Limit this to only the best of the best.
Sort
Now start sorting like items together. This includes formal shirts, casual shirts, jeans, sweats, stuff like that. If you have 21 casual tee shirts, consider choosing your five favorite and getting rid of the rest. If you only have 1 pair of good jeans and the rest didn't fit, this is where you find the real gaps in the wardrobe. You can write items you need down and shop purposefully later.
Assign & Store
This is where you assign places these catagories are going to go and store them. As you are putting items back, put them back in order from favorite to least favorite. Make sure they fit. Remember, the space you have in your house no matter how big or small is your limit. If a jean drawer is full and you have only assigned one jean drawer, you will have to use a different drawer to take space from or donate the rest of the jeans. You already have the best ones back so there is no need to go throughthem all again.
Consider Upgrading Storage
Invest in some good quality hangers. Wire or plastic hangers are the worst. I prefer the fabric hangers so nothing slides around. You can also purchase jeans or skirt hangers that you can hang multiple on. You can also choose to invest in better closet solutions but this isn't necessary. If you choose to shop storage solutions for your wardrobe it is very important to declutter first so that you aren't buying solutions for things you are never going to wear.
Maintenance
Finally, prepare to maintain your organization. I reccomend keeping a donatable bag or bin in your closet at all times so if you try something on and you realize you don't like it, you can throw it in there right away. Always donate it when it gets full and start again. Implement a one in one out rule. When you bring something new in, donate one. This will save you from having to go through the entire process again in the future and make sure your wardrobe is staying fresh.
By following these tips, you can streamline your wardrobe and make it easier to find the items you need while also keeping it organized and clutter free.
