Addressing Homeless Clutter

Updated: May 11, 2021

"A place for everything, everything has a place". How many times did your eyes roll to the back of your skull every time you heard that expression? They might as well have been speaking a foreign language. Personally, I didn't have a clue how to find a place for all my stuff. Who of you while looking for a Band-Aid or a battery or the nail clippers had to check like 3 places?

I know you have busy lives. Whether it's families to take care of or a busy work life, or both! Do yourself a favor and forgive yourself. No shame or resentment belongs here. We are going to only focus on solutions and get you on your feet to having a home that functions and works for you.

Things you need to get started: Garbage bags and baskets or bins. These will be for garbage, donations, and sorted piles.

Please don't try to do an entire bedroom if you only have a small amount of time. If you have 15 minutes, you can tackle a drawer. Be realistic. Here are some tips to get started.

Garbage Bag Therapy: Pressed for time? Go ahead and find a space in your home and just throw out anything that is obvious garbage, has expired, or you just really don't like. None of this is emotional clutter. None of it you should have to think about. This is going to really help you find room for things that you really do want and need homes for.

Sort into piles: It's time to pull everything out and sort into piles. Make immediate decisions on what to get rid of and what to keep. Immediately sort into macro categories. Once you have the categories, gather the other like items from around the house that fit into those categories so you can see what you actually have and find one home for all the like stuff.

Find new homes. This is where you are going to evaluate your things and figure out where they go. Once you have some things sorted, you need to figure out where they should belong. A couple methods are a) the first place you would look for that item or b) the place you use this item or c) the place you always find it lying around. If you always feel like your keys, wallet, and mail are sitting in a certain place on the counter, create some storage there for it. You can hang some hooks for the keys and you can get a cute basket or something for your wallet and mail.

This is really all it takes to find homes for your things. It really doesn't have to be complicated. It is better to think small! If you want to learn more about a really great method to this read all about the S.P.A.C.E Method here and if you would like to learn more about organizing in a very short time, read this.

Keep doing it until you have gone through everything. Before you know it, everything will have a home. It is easy as 1-2-3-
